Anorectal Manometry for Bowel Function
Overview
Get to the root of your digestive concerns, which can be challenging and impact your daily life. Anorectal Manometry is a specialized test to evaluate the function of the rectal and anal muscles.
By measuring pressures and muscle coordination, this procedure aids in the diagnosis of various anorectal disorders, including fecal incontinence and chronic constipation. This objective evaluation provides crucial data for clinicians, enabling them to make precise diagnoses and develop targeted treatment strategies.
Preparation
Anorectal manometry is generally a safe and well-tolerated procedure. To ensure accurate results, your rectum and anus must be empty for the test. Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions on how to prepare, including:
- Dietary Restrictions: You may be asked to avoid eating for a certain period of time during the test
- Enema: You’ll use an enema at home to clear your rectum. Your provider will explain when and how to do this.
What to Expect During the Procedure:
When you arrive at your appointment, you’ll be asked to undress from the waist down or change into a gown. You’ll then lie comfortably on your side with your knees bent.
Here’s what will happen during the test:
- Digital Rectal Exam: Your provider will perform a brief internal exam with a gloved finger to check for any abnormalities.
- Catheter Insertion: A thin, flexible tube (catheter) will be lubricated and gently inserted into your rectum.
- Pressure Measurements: The catheter will measure the pressure inside your rectum at various depths to establish a baseline.
- Balloon Inflation: A small balloon at the end of the catheter will be inflated to different sizes and positions. Your provider will ask you about any sensations you feel and if you experience the urge to have a bowel movement.
- Muscle Function Tests: You’ll be asked to perform specific actions, such as squeezing, relaxing, pushing, and coughing. This allows your provider to assess how your muscles respond.
- Recording Results: Throughout the procedure, your muscle responses and pressure readings will be carefully recorded.
The anorectal manometry procedure typically takes about 30 minutes, although it can range from 15 to 45 minutes.
